The City of Dortmund Economic Development Agency operates in the international sector with a number of players at different levels. These include the Dortmund Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and the Dortmund Chamber of Skilled Crafts (HWK), the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR), the Gesellschaft für Wirtschaftsförderung in Nordrhein-Westfalen (GfW), the German Chambers of Foreign Trade (AHK), the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Economic Development Agency in Dortmund has undertaken a wide variety of activities in the past to expand or initiate international commercial contacts, e.g.
- Marketing the location as an ideal base to Dutch logistics companies
- Initiating a cooperation with the Korea International Logistics Council
- Organising the presence of Dortmund companies wanting to enter the Turkish and Middle East markets at the WIN (World of Industry) fair in Istanbul
- A staff exchange programme between the cities of Xi'an and Dortmund
- Working with the Alumni Club China with the goal of ensuring a permanent link with Dortmund as a location
- Winning Dutch microtechnology companies for Dortmund
- A micro- and nanotechnology workshop in Japan with companies and universities from NRW
